Mike Hinckley (1965- ) “Untitled,” acrylic on photograph (taken by Hinckley), 5 x 7 inches (9 x 11 inches framed), 2018. This is a unique art work, not in a series. The piece is signed and dated on the reverse.
Mike Hinckley was born in New York in 1965 and has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since the mid-70s. He attended California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland (now CCA), Sacramento State, and UC Berkeley. Hinckley’s maternal grandmother was Chicago-based painter Grace Jemsek, who fostered a love for painting in a young Hinckley, by paying one dollar for each painting he made.
Hinckley’s mature work typically employs satire, irony, and conceptual elements. He is a criminal defense lawyer and devout Buddhist, both of which are often reflected in his work. He has exhibited at SOMArts and Incline Gallery in San Francisco. Hinckley maintains a website Goat the Gallery where he exhibits and sells work under a number of pseudonyms.
