Tamsin Spencer Smith was born in Cambridge, England, and grew up in Coconut Grove, Florida. She graduated with highest honors from Kenyon College, for her thesis on Vladimir Nabokov. Smith is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute and has been living in San Francisco since 1997.
Smith has a studio South of Market in San Francisco and her painting practice includes both abstraction and figurative work. She has had several exhibitions in San Francisco, including two solo exhibitions at Adobe Books Backroom Gallery in 2018 and 2019; and group shows at Modern Eden Gallery, Incline Gallery, Guerrero Gallery, Kings Gallery (Unitarian Universalist Church of San Francisco), Avenue 12 Gallery, Analog Gallery, and The Midway Gallery. An exhibition of her abstract collaborations with painter Emilio Villalba, “The Painter’s Alphabet,” was reviewed in Juxtapoz Magazine in 2019.
Smith is also a poet and essayist. Her debut verse collection Word Cave was published by Risk Press. FMSBW released her second collection Between First & Second Sleep in late 2018.
