Kyle Ranson was born in Manhattan and grew up mostly in Connecticut. He attended the Lyme Academy in Old Lyme, CT, where he studied figure drawing and still life oil painting. Thereafter Ranson studied at Maryland Institute, College of Art, for three semesters and then moved to San Francisco in 1994.
Ranson has exhibited widely, including at various venues in Brussels, Sweden, Barcelona, New York City, and Melbourne. He has also exhibited at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco and the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA).
In 2013, the art publication Juxtapoz Magazine published a feature on Ranson which included an interview. He cites comic books, folk art, Surrealism, and painters of the Northern Renaissance as central influences in his work.
Ranson is also a musical artist and has recorded with the bands Pale Hoarse and Strawberry Smog.
