James Eddy “El Matrimonio,” soft pastel pencil and acrylic on industrial grade sandpaper, 19.5 x 21.5 inches (unframed), 2018. The painting is signed in the lower left corner, “J. Eddy ’18”.
James Henry Eddy III was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1971. He earned a BA from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA. In addition to living in San Francisco and Sausalito, CA, Eddy has lived in Simsbury and Old Lime, CT; Fort Worth and San Antonio, TX; Santa Fe and Cimarron, NM; Ashburnham, MA; Alonissos, Greece; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Barcelona and Puerto Banus, Spain (southwest of Marbella in the Costa del Sol); and New York City.
Eddy is a self-taught artist who draws upon his 23 years of knowledge and experience as a Spanish colonial art dealer. Retablos (small oil paintings on tin, often of saints) and ex votos (devotional paintings offering thanks to particular saints for miracles performed) are major influences; though Eddy typically renders dogs in the place of Catholic saints. Eddy’s artistic practice is meant to venerate the animals rather than disparage religion in any way.
Eddy has donated art works to various fundraising auctions in San Francisco, to benefit the Coalition on Homelessness, for instance, but his work is otherwise rarely offered for sale. He has declined opportunities to exhibit his work on several occasions.
